Most Muslim scholars define the companions (Sahabah) of Prophet Muhammad to be the people who lived during his time period, and saw or heard him speak, even for a brief moment. The Qur’an says: “Those who believed and emigrated and strove hard and fought in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives are far higher in degree with Allah. They are the successful. Their Lord gives them glad tidings of mercy from Him, that He is pleased (with them), and of Gardens for them wherein are everlasting delights. They will dwell therein forever. Verily, with Allah is a great reward.”
